“REAL ID” comes from the REAL ID Act of 2005, a federal law that focused on fraud protection, anti-terrorism, and driver license and nondriver license identification card (ID card) security.
The Missouri Department of Revenue is enhancing the security of driver licenses and nondriver identification cards. These changes help protect your identity and decrease fraud.
- ID compliant MO driver licenses are supposed to be available AFTER March 25, 2019
- Beginning October 1, 2020 REAL ID-compliant driver license or nondriver ID cards REQUIRED for:

- Boarding domestic flights
- Accessing certain federal facilities, included military bases and federal courthouses
- Entering a nuclear power plant
- REAL ID-compliant driver license or nondriver ID cards NOT required for:

- Driving
- Voting or registering to vote
- State purposes
- Age verification
- Transaction and processing fees for obtaining REAL-ID will be the same as they are currently.
- MO REAL-ID compliant driver licenses and nondriver ID cards will have a gold star in the upper right-hand corner.
- You may not need a MO REAL-ID if you hold another form of identification that meets federal requirements, such as a valid U.S. passport or passport card.
