Aging Ahead engages community partners in socially responsible initiatives that are truly a win-win situation for all. As we continue to find ways to expand the CHOICE portfolio, Aging Ahead recently combined forces with partners to offer an exciting, new program to seniors that helps ensure the journey of aging is filled with health, nutrition, and social interaction. The Y’s Choice Program exists out of the combined efforts and resources of Aging Ahead, the YMCA, and Silver Sneakers. The program started taking shape and launched this past April at the Edward Jones YMCA branch in Maryland Heights. The program runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11am to 1pm. Seniors, 60 years of age or older, are transported to the YMCA, have full access to the YMCA facilities including all of its programs/classes, and enjoy a nutritious catered lunch.
Members have a wide variety of activities to choose from while at the YMCA. They can choose to take a class (line dancing anyone?), do laps in the pool, walk the track, use exercise equipment/weights or just relax and have coffee and chat with friends in the lobby. Participants choose how to spend their time and let us coordinate travel and lunch! Educational presentations are also offered once a month.
There are four boxed lunch options to choose from each day and can be eaten at the YMCA or picked up for takeout. The choices include meat or vegetarian options to include a wider variety of eating habits. A suggested donation of $5 is appreciated.

Is this program available in Monthomery Alabama? The East YMCA on Pelzer Avenue is close to my home. Thank you.

This was a pilot program with our St. Louis YMCA’s and our CHOICE program. We are not sure if your YMCA has a program similar to ours. I would call them and see if they have something. Also your Area Agency on Aging will be able to connect your local resources, programs and meals.

Will yhe south county YMCA have a choice program with lunch?
Stephanie Patrick
We do not currently provide programming at the South county YMCA. The best alternative option would be to visit the south county senior center or attend a choice program held at the Grant’s View library when we return there in the fall.
