Presentation Description:

Increasing gun violence affects the safety and well-being of everyone in our communities. Be SMART is an educational program for adults to help keep our children and families safe. Adults of all ages play key roles in families and communities to reduce risks of firearm-related homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings. One hundred Americans are shot and killed in this country every day. Firearms are the second leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the US. We know that 4.6 million kids live in homes where guns are loaded and unlocked. Also, studies show that 7.3 million grandparents live with grandchildren and 1/3 of Americans over 65 years-old own guns; emphasizing gun safety a concern with all adults.

Be SMART teaches it is the adult’s responsibility to keep kids safe. We do this by teaching five easy-to-learn behaviors, using our S.M.A.R.T. framework.
The Be SMART framework for adults to keep kids safe are:
S – Secure guns and ammunition separately in homes and vehicles
M – Model safe behavior around guns
A – Ask if guns are present how are they stored in homes and vehicles
R – Recognize the role of guns in suicide
T – Tell your peers to Be SMART

Benefits for attendees are to: 1- Hear key issues and evidence on gun violence affecting the safety of children, families, and communities, 2- Learn the S.M.A.R.T. framework with easy to learn behaviors to promote gun safety, and 3- Discuss how Be SMART applies to older adults.
