Healthy Hydration Habits 7-25-23

As we age, adequate hydration can become more of a challenge. Certain conditions, medications, or just decreased overall thirst can affect how much water we consume on a daily basis. It’s important to get enough water to avoid dehydration and to feel your best.

How much do I need?

General recommendations are 64 oz of water per day, or 8 glasses of 8 oz per day. Different bodies need different amounts of fluid. Certain conditions and medications can affect how much fluid you need per day. Please consult with your doctor, especially if you have fluid limits.

Okay, I know how much and I know I need to hydrate, but how!?

  • Designate a water bottle to go with you everywhere. Reusable water bottles are easy to use and reduce waste from single-use plastic bottles. Keeping 2 may be best, 1 for home and 1 for travel.
  • Set reminders or make marks on your water bottle to set goals. For example, you can set a goal to drink 8 oz of water by 10am.
  • Use flavors that make water exciting! You can add fruit, herbs, juices, or drink mixes to your water in order to encourage hydration. Please be mindful of the electrolytes in drink mix powders if you are on sodium or potassium restrictions.

Dehydration can be dangerous. Be sure to know the signs and symptoms:

  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth, lips, and eyes
  • Decreased urination
  • Headache Fatigue
  • Increased thirst
