The History of Women in Death Care and the Emergence of the Death Doula Profession 1-28-25

January 28, 2025
10:00 am

Location: Oak Bend Library – 842 S Holmes Ave, St. Louis, MO 63122

Presentation Description:   Prior to the commercialization and medicalization of death, women were the caretakers of the dying. This changed with the emergence of commercialized and licensed funeral businesses. This presentation will provide an overview of historical funerary practices and the ways in which women have been relied on and excluded from death work. I will discuss how this history led into the current emergence of the End-of-Life Doula profession and the rising popularity of Death Doulas. I will be explaining not only what a Death Doula does, but what they don’t do, and reasons a family might look into this supportive end-of-life care. I will also address concerns about the relatively new role of Death Doulas and how to make an educated choice about whether this is the right choice for their family.
