Affton Senior Center Spreading Joy
Imagine your grandparent doing housework, cooking for their family, and at the end of the day humming by the fire while knitting a sweater for the neighbor in need down the street. Our seniors come from a generation of caring for each other but now more than ever, do not feel as needed as they once were before.
The Hope Crafters is a social group of talented seniors who come together to socialize and pour love into their handcrafted items. This knowledgeable group knits, crotchets, quilts, and ties crafts together as they bond over stories from 40, 50, and sometimes 60 years ago. Connecting with local charities, they send these much needed items to seniors, families, and babies in need.
Hope Crafters has already donated 130+ items to charities in the area including handmade blankets, baby sweaters, hats, booties, pillow cases, and more. They bring hobbies they have always known and teach each other new hobbies to work on together. Projects range from taking a few days to a few months and all are sent into their community.
They also connect with our homebound clients. Each client receives a personalized birthday card and a handmade holiday present. For many, these kind gestures reach seniors that otherwise wouldn’t have received acknowledgement on their birthday or during the holidays.
Loneliness and social isolation are two of the biggest threats facing our senior population. This amazing group has banded together to fight not only their own loneliness but also reach out to the community to send hope-filled items to those in need. They meet at the Affton Senior Center located inside the Village at Mackenzie Place on Thursday afternoons from 12:30-3:00pm. Everyone is welcome!
